Life is busy, messy, unpredictable, and a bit chaotic at times. I am literally writing this with my son napping across my lap because as soon as I put him down I know he will wake up. So how do you get things done when you’re always on the run? Well I have some tips to help you sneak in the workouts no matter how “busy” we are!
- Make your priorities-One of the reasons workouts don’t always happen is because it is not a priority in your life. We choose tv over working out, we pick cleaning our house instead of working out, happy hour beats out the gym time. So you need to ask yourself what am I making a priority that I don’t need to be. If you have young kids like I do I totally understand, it can be tricky dealing with a young baby and working out at home. I put my workout clothes on, bring all the equipment I will need to the living room. I set up toys for my son and then start my workout. Sometimes I make it all the way through without intruption while other times I need to stop multiple times to make him happy. I just accept that it might not be perfect but I’m moving and staying active.
- Write it down- Mark your calendars! Block out time in your calendar for your workout. Commit to it like you would an appointment with a boss. Only you’re the boss of your calendar. Make time for you and stick to it! If you know your day is crazy after the kids wake up you might need to wake up a little earlier and squeeze in your workout while they are still snoozing. Whatever time you choose stay consistent with it as consistency will help you build that habit.
- Have an accountability partner- Do you need to check in with someone to make sure you get your workouts in? If you know you need that extra push enlist a friend, join a group, hire a trainer, do a facebook live or take a selfie after every workout you complete to help hold yourself accountable.
- Reframe what you consider a workout- This one could be the key to helping everyone get a workout in. Reconsider what you think of as a workout. So many times we think we have to go to the gym workout for an hour, workup a tremendous sweat in order to call it a complete workout. In reality a 10 minute quickie workout in the middle of your day is better then nothing. If getting up and doing squats, pushups, an extra lap around your office is all you can squeeze into your day a few days a week that is better then nothing. That reframe can help you really step into what fits best into your lifestyle. I personally have shorten my lifting sessions from 45 minutes to 20 minutes since my son was born. I’m still moving but have become more efficient with my workout and just happy I am making time for moving my body on any level.
We always make time for what is important to us and if moving your body and your fitness is important there are always ways to squeeze in something into your day. Make time this week to map out what workouts your going to do each day this week and put them in your calendar.
